Good quality metering taken in its proper context not only reports the flow of a hydrocarbon but may also necessitate online sampling, online density measurement and other factors that may affect the general quality and economic value of the product in question.
A liquid metering system might include an automatic grab sampler that takes a small fraction of the total volume into a receiver (receiving can) which is then in turned analysed usually in a laboratory to determine the properties of the liquid such as density, hydrogen suphide , viscosity, water content and vapour pressure.

EESIFLO ISOKINETIC INLINE SYSTEMS
Sampling devices traditionally mounted into the main pipeline are guaranteed to be truly isokinetic and avoid the irregularities in measurement that are seen in the fast loop

of Homogeneous Mixtures
EESIFLO International is a manufacturer of stand alone monitoring devices to assist in online determination of crude oil and hydrocarbon quality. This may involve design , fabrication , start up and training of operators in the use of inline systems to improve overall fiscal metering. It is important that the fluid being sampled or electronically measured is homogeneous at the sample take off location.
Great care must be taken, especially when dealing with larger pipe diameters as separation of water and oil (due to gravity) is guaranteed and this would mean that an operator could obtain non representative samples or non representative online electronic measurements e.g the results might always be showing “dry” oil although the actual water content could be 2, 5 , 10 or 20% etc.
EESIFLO International as a responsible designer and manufacturer recognizes the importance of international standards such as ISO 3171 “Petroleum Liquids- Automatic Pipeline Sampling” for evaluation of homogeneous liquids and mixing requirements.
The main principle of the ISO 3171 standard is to calculate the water in oil concentration across the pipe section from top to bottom in a horizontal pipe.
ISO 3171 recommends as C1/C2 ratio of 0.9 or higher, where 1.0 indicates a completely homogeneous mixture.
EESIFLO has supplied complete working online sampling systems in compliance to these standards on an international basis . Since this standard’s recommendation of homogeneous samples is a critical factor in reliable measurements, the same should apply (as good practice) to online electronic measurement.
